Alternative feed protein for pigs
LOW synthetic amino acid prices offer pig producers who home mill-and-mix rations scope to cut feed costs.
Shropshire-based nutritionist Caroline Bevan suggests that with high soya prices, synthetic amino acids offer an attractive alternative method of supplying the pigs nutrient requirements.
While prices are low for such products, due to the exchange rate and increasing market competition, prices are fluctuating hourly and Mrs Bevan advises following the market carefully to maximise benefits.
"Prices for the amino acid lysine have dropped from £3/kg to £1.50/kg which for a grower diet – where typical inclusion rates are 1-2kg/t – means savings of £3/t are possible," says Mrs Bevan
"Younger pig diets have higher inclusion rates of about 5kg so savings of £4.50/t are possible."
