Spectacular yellow rust on untreated winter wheat trials at pbi Cambridge highlights big differences between varieties. Breeder Stephen Brown (left), seen here with colleague John Howie, believes this seasons attack by the YR17 strain of the disease is the most aggressive for many years. It is proving especially useful in distinguishing differences in resistance between varieties with similar NIAB ratings, he says. Riband and Rialto for example both merit a five on the one to nine NIAB scale, but the latter is displaying far fewer symptoms.
