Under way again at last. Contractor Chris Hodgson resumes sugar beet harvesting at Guild House Farm, East Knapton, N Yorks. The first four consecutive dry days since September in many parts of the country saw good progress around last weekend, reports British Sugars Chris Carter. Earlier, supplies to the Newark and west midlands factories had become quite tight, he admits. But with an estimated quarter of the UK crop still in the ground, compared with only 19% this time last year, BS urges growers to take every opportunity to lift over the holiday period provided the land is fit.
