Beef interbreed for Yorks

By Jeremy Hunt

A NAIL-BITING finale to the beef interbreed championship at the Great Yorkshire Show almost brought yet another victory in this competition to the Clements family from Suffolk, but a narrow five point lead put North Yorks exhibitor Stephen Potters outstanding Limousin cow in top spot.

The beef title is based on points awarded to every breed by each of the breed judges. Although a rather long-winded affair – the show organisers are looking at ways of streamlining the marking system – the championship nearly went back to Albert Clements and family, who were showing Simmental, Charolais and Aberdeen Angus in the Harrogate rings last week.

But edging ahead was Mr Potters Broadmeadows Jiji, a six-year-old Limousin due to calve her third at the end of the year after producing two bulls selling at 3900gns and 6500gns.

Shes by the breeds top sire, Broadmeadows Cannon, and was on her first outing of the season. In 1997 and 1998 she was female champion at the Great Yorkshire; giving her the overall breed ticket this year was Carlisle auctioneer and Limousin breeder David Thomlinson.

"An absolutely top-class representative of the breed. Shes a great cow to handle, well fleshed, completely balanced all through and has great ring presence," commented Mr Thomlinson.

Runner-up was the Clements familys Simmental bull Darshams Gareth, a powerful son of Brinkton Christian whose scale and width was widely praised.

Well known Cumbria Charolais breeder George Stoddart had a busy morning judging interbreed beef on the second morning. They included a high quality parade of young cattle bidding for the junior beef championship.

Clinching the junior title was Alwent Peregrin, a stylish Charolais heifer from T Nesbitt and Sons herd from Darlington that had been junior breed champion at the Royal Show. This 13-month-old is full sister to the 13,000gns Alwent Osprey sold at Perth last October.

Mr Stoddart described his junior champion as "a convincing winner with a great top and excellent hindquarter for one so young."

The strong turn-out of Holsteins produced the interbreed dairy champion in C Iveson Farms cow Myersgarth Budget Sunshine from their herd at Leyburn, North Yorks. This second calver gave almost 12,000kg as a heifer.

The sheep section was swelled with almost 1500 entries including familiar Yorkshire favourites like the Wensleydale as well as newcomers like the Zwartbles.

Yorkshire Dales vet Jack Watkinson, who was the BBCs veterinary advisor to the TV programme All Creatures Great and Small, runs a successful flock of Wensleydale sheep but despite winning at top level over many years a breed title at Harrogate had always eluded him.

Last week he put that right with a striking hogg in wool that led the breed under judge Brian Holgate from Blackburn, Lancashire.

In line with other shows this season the Texel classes were strong, producing the champion in a shearling ewe from John Norths 45-strong flock at Doncaster. The ewe, by the home-bred Loxley Cracker, is unbeaten this season.

York Charollais breeders Charles and Valerie Marwood were in the midst of their most hectic fortnight of the year after a week at the Royal, followed by the Great Yorkshire and then straight off to sell their first ram lambs of the season from their Foulrice flock at the Charollais society sale at Lichfield.

But they proved invincible in the sheep interbreed championship – the first time an all-breeds award has been offered at the show – to capture the title with a shearling ewe by Artnagullion Pioneer, a ram that was bought by Mr Marwood at the breed sale at Portadown in 1997. The ewe is one of the flocks highest ranking females on figures.

The Gregory family from Selby once again stood supreme champion in the pig section with Poplarburn Queen Mary 107th, yet another from this successful herd of top winning Large Whites.

In reserve spot was theDuroc boar Seaborough Sueske from Seaborough Pigs and ably handled by 12-year-old Bradley Loveless.

Pig exhibitors were infuriated to learn that sandwich bars on the ground were using Danish bacon. The MLC stepped in to ensure that 1t of British bacon was delivered to the show on the second day.
