Brewer’s droop for four out of six

JUST two malting barley varieties have been added to the Institute of Brewers Approved List this year, the Institute announced on Monday (24 September).
Winter variety Leonie and spring barley Cellar have been given Provisional 1 status on the IOB Approved List for 2001/02.
Another four varieties tested in work funded jointly by Home Grown Cereals Authority and Brewing Research International failed to make the grade.
These were winter varieties Opal and Vanessa, and spring varieties County and Pewter.
In the small scale micromalting trials, Leonie performed as well as Halcyon with Cellar matching malting mainstay Optic.
“These two varieties will now progress to commercial-scale malting and brewing trials,” said Chris Booer, head maltster at BRI.
