BSE report to cost £30m

THE inquiry into BSE is expected to cost £30 million by the time a report is published next March or April.

Already the cost has reached £20m but another £10m will be needed before it is wound up. The inquiry was originally forecast to cost £10m.

The investigation employs 80 staff. More than 300 people have given statements and there have been 130 days of hearings. The ministry of agriculture alone has provided five million pages of evidence.
