Cheer for Suffolks

THE annual late autumn sale of Suffolk females at Edinburgh attracted one of the largest crowds seen for some years.

"A good, sound trade from a lively audience and a clear vote of confidence in the Suffolk," commented auctioneer George Purves.

He took his highest bid of 4000gns from Judith Barbour who runs the Ewebank flock in Dumfriesshire. Her number one choice was a powerful ewe lamb from Messrs Benzies Meikleson flock based at Turriff, Aberdeenshire and which had been interbreed champion at Turriff Show.

This ewe lamb was by Muiresk Marci Marvellous, a 14,500gns ram, and out of a ewe by the 8000gns Westend Lamtarra which goes back to some of the best Barrons breeding.

Another ewe lamb from the same pen by Perrinpit Pele and out of a Cairness Caravelle sired dam, sold to Borders breeder Ian Park, Coldstream at 600gns. He also paid 700gns for a Muiresk Ronaldo gimmer. Shes in-lamb to a Muiresk Eurostar – the 10,000gns son of the 75,000gns Stockton Almighty that was MLC champion at the Edinburgh sale in July.

Mrs Barbour invested 1100gns in a ewe lamb from the dispersal of the Anvil flock for William Henderson, Carnwath, Lanark.

And age proved no barrier when a three-crop ewe from the same consignment took bidding to 1000gns to Lanarkshire breeder Alec Gray (John Swan &Sons).

This ewe is by Cairness Krypton and was in-lamb to Muiresk Storm – a 4000gns ram that is ET-brother to the 32,000gns Muiresk Bobortoo.
