Confidence hit by European BSE

by FWi staff

THE aftermath of the European BSE crisis could continue to affect consumer confidence, Liberal Democrat rural affairs spokesman Colin Breed has warned.

Speaking to Farmers Weekly, Mr Breed said he believed that BSE was among three issues set to make big agricultural news during 2001.

It will be interesting to see how Europe and the Food Standards Agency tackle the matter to re-establish consumer confidence, he said.

“Secondly, there is the Rural White Paper and how that is actually delivered. I am not certain we have an action plan that can actually deliver.

Finally, there is the big black cloud of TB which is a problem that I dont think has been fully recognised.

If it is not tackled then we could end up with a national herd which is not classified as TB free.”
