Cooper wins malt award
COOPER spring barley has won the Institute of Brewings National Malting Barley Award for England and Wales for John Halsall and John Garton-Pope of Millsbridge Farm, Tarbock near Liverpool.
Runner-up was Richard Riseborough of Field Farm, Hillington, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, with a sample of Fanfare. Although the winning samples were good, the general quality of entries was only moderate, reflecting the season, says Michael Banks, chairman of the judging panel.
Prisma and Derkado took top malting honours in Scotland last week.
For the second year in succession, William Innes of Fordyce, Banffshire, won the Institute of Brewing national malting barley championship for Scotland. His sample of Prisma was entered by Pauls Malt of Buckie.
Prisma also claimed the reserve championship, entered by United Distillers and produced by J J and S Grant of East Mains, Elgin.
• At the Scottish Winter Fair in Perth, the malting barley championship went to Alex Galbraith, Upper Kinneil, Linlithgow, with a sample of Derkado.
