Cumbrian appeal
A CUMBRIAN appeal fund launched to help victims of foot-and-mouth has surpassed its original target to meet the overwhelming demand from needy farmers.
Launched by leading mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington in April, The Cumbria Community Foundations Community Recovery Fund set a target of £1.2m. To date that has been exceeded by £400,000 with £524,000 already awarded to 217 groups and 237 individuals.
The target has been increased to £2.1m in order to meet demand from farmers in difficulty. *
At the same time a new fund has been launched by the Heart of Cumbria group to help farmers feed their lambs over the winter.
The group, which has campaigned against the governments F&M slaughter policy, fears that many farmers will be forced to have their lambs slaughtered under the governments welfare disposal scheme and wants to save them.
The group is also asking farmers with spare fodder to donate it to a feed pool where it can be distributed to others who are running out.
