Dangerous gates and tags
ADVICE to livestock farmers about to buy new gates:
I have 158 cattle of varying ages. Since the introduction of the large yellow secondary plastic ear tags, I have had at least 18 animals rip their ears apart and lose the ear tag on metal gates with diagonal cross bars.
It is far safer to buy gates with bars that only go from top to bottom.
I am sure these tags have been ripped out when the cattle rubbed their heads on the gates and got the tags caught in the apex of the cross bars.
Be warned.
