A BIG crowd of Holstein buyers produced some up-beat bidding at the dispersal of Mark and Hazel Vernons Parklands herd at Hatherton, near Nantwich, Cheshire.
A welcome improvement in demand saw the 135 cows settle at £672 on a day when trade was described by the auctioneers as "at times, fast and furious".
The Vernons decision to temporarily cease milk production gave breeders the chance to snap up some quality young cows and milking heifers by a host of fashionable sires, although daughters of Bookie and Callisto were particularly favoured.
But it was a fresh second-calver by Singing-Brook Manager that was considered too good to miss by volume buyers J R & C E Jones, Weston-under-Redcastle, Shropshire. The Joneses paid the days top price of 900gns for Parklands Manager Shady, who was giving 45.8kg on the day after a heifer lactation of 9000kg.
She was one of seven lots claimed by Messrs Jones. Others included 850gns for the second-calver Parklands Labelle Oakapple – giving 43kg – and 820gns for Parklands Choice Hawk, another second-calver by Ebony Choice.
Lancs dairy farmers A & C Wightman of Carnforth filled a wagon with 10 lots for their Barbon herd. It included the highest priced Bookie daughter when the 9100kg second calver Trien Bookie Mtrien made 850gns. She is due in June to Starboy.
The Wightmans paid the same price for Parklands Park Happy, a second calver that gave 9500kg as a heifer and is springing to Patron.
Averages 135 cows £672, 12 in-calf heifers £685 (Wright-Manley). *
