DISEASE-FREEEXPORTS
INTERNATIONAL trade in live animals and products could suffer unless steps are taken to eradicate diseases which are a concern in Europe.
Adam Duncan, of the Cattle Health Certification Standards (CHeCS), told the conference that the non-statutory diseases of most concern were bovine viral diarrhoea, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, leptospirosis and Johnes.
"The UK cattle industry is lagging behind its European counterparts in the control and eradication of those non-statutory diseases considered of most importance."
He urged producers to implement biosecurity measures, such as running a closed herd and isolating bought in animals, and to join a licensed health scheme.
