‘E.coli risk from skimmed milk’
SKIMMED milk from smaller dairies carries the risk of E.coli bug, warns the Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS).
Larger dairies supplying supermarkets use modern equipment which eliminates potentially harmful bacteria, Anita Rampling of the PHLS told its annual meeting.
But the risk comes from machines built before skimmed milk became popular, more likely to be found in smaller dairies.
These skim milk in a way which means the milk is not properly pasteurised, Ms Rampling told the New Scientist magazine.
She said the problem was compounded by the way the milk was checked to ensure it was pasteurised which could produce false readings.
