Early potato crop best for three years
EARLY potatoes have been cropping their best for three years. But the main crop is still finely balanced, according to figures from the British Potato Council.
The council reports that early growers saw an 80% rise in returns this year, against 1987. This was the best result since 1995, with gross returns put at £6800 per acre.
The main crop will depend on yields, area planted, disease control and cross-channel trade as well as weather.
