SAMPLING of cooked and uncooked meats in butchers shops is to be stepped up over the summer as part of a campaign to make the public aware of the dangers of E coli O157.

Specialists from the Public Health Laboratory Service and the local authority watchdog LACOTS began visits last week to scores of shops.

The study follows a number of health recommendations made in the Pennington report prompted by the death of 18 people in an outbreak in Lanarkshire.
