EU lifts live pig export ban

By FWi staff

THE EU has lifted its ban on live exports of English pigs, following he Governments success in eliminating the swine fever outbreak.

Some 1500 farms and breeding farms were quarantined and restrictions placed on livestock movements.

About 75,000 pigs suspected of contact with the disease were killed, and a further 200,000 slaughtered to prevent overcrowding, reports the Financial Times.

The cost of the crisis had been estimated at 5-6 million.
