Expected yields below average

HARVEST finished this morning for Chris Moore, who farms with his brother Dave near Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire. "Wheat yields have been below average but we’re not too disappointed as it could have been a lot worse."

His 280ha (700 acres) of winter wheat have averaged 7.9t/ha (3.2t/acre), which is below the expected average of 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre). "The yields are not surprising as a lot of them were drilled in November after root crops. 200acres were sown in March."

Claire and Consort feed crops have performed quite well, but Malacca has been disappointing. "It did not yield very well, and I won’t grow it again, I’m not a big milling grower. It failed quality on Hagberg at sub 150. It’s just one of those things." Some Cadenza wheat made milling standard.

Overall, he is not too disappointed with the harvest, and is currently harvesting beetroot before potatoes.
