DEFRA tells Merial to begin foot and mouth vaccine production

DEFRA has instructed Merial to commence production of a foot and mouth vaccine at its facility at Pirbright.

Merial, which shares the facility at Pirbright with the Institute of Animal Health, is the company implicated in the disease outbreak.

However, it is also the organisation contracted by DEFRA to produce vaccine in the event of an outbreak.

The chief veterinary officer Debby Reynolds told a press briefing on Monday (6 August) that the decision had not yet been made to go-ahead with vaccination.

But, she said, it was sensible to hold stocks should the government deem it necessary.

The chief vet also explained that the vaccination of stock identified as at risk will be performed by Genus.
