Farming, housing threaten woodlands
INTENSIVE agriculture and housing developments are threatening woodland, a new study claims.
The Woodland Trust says legal loopholes and poor planning regulations mean 85% of Britains ancient woodland has no legal protection, reports The Daily Express.
Intensive agriculture is blamed for isolating fragments of woodland, and this is compounded by overgrazing which thwarts new tree growth.
More than 50% of ancient woodland has been destroyed since the 30s and now only covers 2% of total land area.
