THE UK dairy industry is losing over £20m a year because systems used to formulate dairy rations are up to 10 years out of date.
A new £825,000 MAFF research programme aims to tackle this, explains John Allen, chairman of the MAFF Feed Into Milk research programme. The four-year study will create a modern ration formulation model taking into account marketing factors such as milk constituents, advances in breeding and nutrition.
"If feed efficiency could be increased by 5%, and the uptake of technology was 50%, the direct benefit to the UK dairy industry would be over £20m a year," he says.
