Fife couples Herefords clinch herd of year title

By Jeremy Hunt

SCOTTISH Hereford breeders John and Margaret Cameron had a day to remember at the breed societys autumn show and sale at Hereford Market.

Mr Cameron, who was guest speaker at the pre-sale dinner, was surprised to find that he and his wifes Baldinnie herd run at Balbuthie, Fife had won the Herd of the Year competition.

And at the following days sale three of the couples four entries realised the top three female prices.

Top call of 1650gns came for the served heifer Baldinnie 1 Malinda, a son of the Voyageur sired Panmure 1 Klansman, taken by Mrs Marlene Newbury for her Huntworth herd at Taunton.

Mrs Newbury runs the herd alongside the Butcombe herd of husband-and-wife team of S J and A J Davies who invested 1250gns in Baldinnie 1 Ruth, another served heifer by Klansman.

The reserve female champion, Baldinnie 1 Kilearn, went to new breeder R B Vincent, Axbridge, Somerset at 900gns, who also took a young cow from West Yorkshire vendor D Blockleys Blakelaw herd at 900gns.

The top price of 2200gns came for the reserve male champion shown by Lancashire breeder Len Cox from Bolton. His Blakelaw 1 Omega son Masefield 1 Neptune has been a consistent winner on the show circuit this year. He made 2200gns to breed society vice-president J Hall Fraser, Belfast.

Overall male champion was Bosa 1 Never-Say-Die – a son of Boundless 1 Keynote – from Gerald Blandford, Ledbury, Herefordshire. He went to J Strachan, Kincardineshire at 1600gns.

AVERAGES: Bulls £1130 and females £773. (Russell, Baldwin and Bright)
