Food Agency warns over GM labels

FOOD containing genetically modified ingredients must be clearly labelled following the introduction of new rules, the Food Standards Agency has warned.
New rules introduced this week also tighten up labelling for additives, and the requirements for businesses selling foods to catering suppliers.
All products containing GM soya and maize must now also be labelled, to boost consumer choice, said Prof Sir John Krebs, the agencys chairman.
“I therefore very much welcome these new requirements, which will further improve the ability of consumers to make informed choices,” he said.
But more would have to be done before the Agency is completely happy with the labelling issue, Prof Krebs added.
“There is still much to be done before the Agency will be satisfied that the labelling rules in this area are complete,” he said.
Agency officials are now pressing the European Commission to bring forward further proposals on GM-free claims.
