French beef offer ‘disastrous’

ACCEPTING a French offer to take Scotch beef would have been “disastrous” for Scottish producers, the Scottish Executives first minister Donald Dewar said yesterday (Thursday).

Mr Dewar was responding to a jibe from Dennis Canavan, the independent member for Falkirk West.

Mr Canavan called Mr Dewar a puppet who had not been consulted by Prime Minister Tony Blair about the offer from his French counterpart.

This follows French prime minister Lionel Jospins offer take grass-fed, primarily Scottish, beef as a possible solution to the French ban on British beef.
