Grand prize to be won…

29 September 2000

This Fabius crop was sown into cold, heavy clay over greensand on May 6, following a flax crop. An N top-dressing in early June supplemented the NPK applied at drilling, while atrazine applied at half-rate, pre-emergence, has kept the crop weed-free. Despite an altitude of only 40m (130ft), and south coast location, the heavy soil makes this a relatively marginal site for growing maize. However, by Aug 31, plants were approaching 2.4m (8ft) tall with well developed cobs; planned harvest date is the third week in September.

Grand prize to be won…

farmers weekly, in association with Advanta UK, is giving away £1000* worth of forage maize seed every week for the next two weeks – and you can enter each week to increase your chances of winning.

Entering the competition is simple. Use your skill and the agronomic information provided to guess the yield of the maize field shown in the photo.

Four winners will be able to select £1000 worth of forage maize from any Advanta variety available commercially in the UK such as Hudson, Lincoln, Melody, Fabius, Orient, Andante, Renard, Sonnet, Serenade or Ivory.

The yield of all crops will be calculated from a sample at harvest and winners notified by late October. In the event of more than one correct entry, the tie-break question requires you to estimate the crops starch percentage.

*Price based on 2001 RRPs.
