High OSR yields on heavy land

JOHN STEEL, who farms with his brother at Hamerton near Huntingdon, has had encouraging oilseed rape yields. Now they await better weather to start on wheat.

On heavy land 97ha (240 acres) of Apex yielded slightly above average. “The seeds were smaller than normal, but in general it was not too bad. Any crop which is wet in flower will not produce the best.”

The crop was combined between 4.6-8.6% moisture (during the hot, dry spell).

The farm has also done trials of Lutin for Monsanto in small plots.

He says that a dry spell will give them a start into Claire wheat, but not all of the crop is fit yet. There are also peas on the farm.
