• THE European commissioner for budget, Michaele Schreyer, has claimed the UK will do well out of enlargement even taking into account the extra budgetary costs. The UK will only fund 6-7% of the net expenditure allocated to new member states because of the rebate. Mr Schreyer said enlargement would be "a good deal".
• MAFF has avoided triggering penalties for maladministration despite the fact that some IACS claims have still not been paid. Under EU rules, the ministry has to pay at least 96.15% of claims by Jan 31 to avoid fines. The NFU is pushing for the government to compensate farmers for the delays.
• BRITAIN is to host the Aberdeen Angus cattle breeders 19-day 2001 World Forum for the first time since 1977.
The forum is held every four years, alternating between the northern and southern hemispheres. Delegates from 18 countries are expected and will end their tour of the UK with a visit to the Royal Show (Jul 2-5).
• SURREY Agricultural Society and Business Link will host the first Surrey Farming Week (May 20-28) which will be aimed at informing debate over the countryside and securing a future for the countys rural areas. The programme will include conservation farm walks, school visits, rural business seminars and farm open days.
• THE Country Land and Business Association has condemned police authorities that are failing to keep up with demand for firearms certificate renewals. The CLA is concerned some forces are routinely taking four to six months to process applications leaving gun owners without a valid licence and unable to buy ammunition.
