Indian summer follows the rains

AS A WARM but wet summer draws to a close, England and Wales at least look set for a spell of more settled weather.
The UK received 163mm of rainfall over August, some 180% of the average, according to latest Met Office figures.
Certain areas received well over double their average August rainfall. Eskdalemuir, Dumfries and Galloway, received 281mm, or 220% of the average, while Bedford had 178mm or 338% of the monthly average.
“It has certainly been quite a warm month, if a wet one,” said a Met Office spokesman, referring to a mean daily maximum temperature of 20.1 degrees Celsius, 1.7 degrees above the average.
“The majority of the month has been dominated by Atlantic depressions and the remnants of tropical storms.”
But September should bring some much needed settled conditions across much of the UK, although northern England and Scotland could be troubled by further rain at times.
“Certainly for the southern half of the country, high pressure will be the dominant feature, bringing generally dry and settled conditions.”
“This high pressure should extend further north from Sunday (Sept 5), meaning many places should enjoy some settled spells over the next week.”
In the meantime, parts of Scotland could well be in for further wet and windy weather, he added.
“We could well be in for some cool nights – the autumnal feel is set to continue, with night time temperatures falling close to freezing.”
