Late Optic causes concern

THE late harvest is beginning to cause concern for spring barleys in Wiltshire.

Nick Brown, at Wiltshire Grain reports some Optic has come in pre-germinated and split. “Weve only had it on one or two loads and you have to look hard, but it is a worrying sign.”

He blames recent weather: “The barley out there is very fit. It should have been cut before the rain came. Its such a late harvest – thats whats hitting it.”

Everything else is coming in as he expected. “Bushel weight is the only problem.” The average bushel weight for the class one milling wheat pool is usually around 80kg/hl. This year it is 77kg/hl.
