New organic study

IDENTIFYING suitable breeds and crosses for organic dairy farms is the topic of a new SAC study, funded by the Scottish Executive.

Holsteins are still likely to be the most appropriate breed in many cases, according to SAC dairy geneticist Jennie Pryce. "But some organic producers have expressed disappointing production results.

"Other breeds and crossbreds may offer real advantages, especially for fitness and vitality traits." These traits may be more important to organic producers who want to minimise the need for drugs to treat or prevent disease. &#42
