New Years honours in farming industry

IAN Gardiner, deputy director general of the NFU, topped the list of New Years honours for the agriculture industry.
Mr Gardiner, who is based at the NFUs headquarters in London, was rewarded with an OBE for his contribution to agriculture. He joined the unions economics department in 1973 and formerly held the post of policy director.
Although there were no knighthoods for anyone within the farming community there were plenty of other awards.

CBE Grahame Bulfield, director of the Roslin Institute for services to animal genetics; Ian Galloway, chairman of Scotbeef, for services to the beef industry; Lance Lanyon, principal, Royal Veterinary College, for services to veterinary education and science; Thomas Little, lately chief executive of Veterinary Laboratories Agency, MAFF.
OBE John Aggett, for services to the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and processes; Margaret Collinson, JP, for services to agriculture and the community; Margaret Dalton, farmer, for services to agriculture and the community in Ceredigion; Gerald Wells, lately Grade 6, Veterinary Laboratories Agency, MAFF.
MBE Arthur Appleby and Florence Appleby, for services to the cheese industry in Shropshire; David Biles, for services to the community, especially agriculture, on the Isle of Wight; Graham Bunn, manager for services to the environment and farming in Norfolk; Julia Duffield, farmer, for services to agriculture in Norfolk; James Fisher, for services to the conservation of Scotlands wildlife; Mary Howie, farmer, for services to agriculture and agricultural research; Judith Lund, for services to rural issues in Co Durham; Phillip Morley, higher executive officer, MAFF; Richard Salisbury, for services to the European Dairy Farming Event; Paul Savage, farmer, for services to agriculture; John Sevenoaks, livestock dealer for services to the farming community in south west England; Alexander Taylor, lately senior agriculture adviser for services to the Scottish Agriculture College; Kenneth Watson, farmer, Orkney, for services to the Hill Farming Advisory Committee. *
