NFU calls for fertiliser price probe

By FWi staff

FARMERS representatives are drawing up detailed plans to persuade the Office of Fair Trading to investigate the fertiliser industry, reports the Financial Times.

This follows price increases which have seen the cost of fertiliser rise by 40% in the past nine months.

The National Farmers Union is now trying to convince the watchdog of its case against fertiliser companies.

Last month the National Farmers Union of Scotland wrote to the OFT to
complain.

Manufacturers, who on Thursday (7 Sep) held talks with the NFU, said increases are due to the rising cost of crude oil used to make fertiliser.

THE NFU is also challenging a European Commission decision to impose import tariffs on fertiliser supplies from Eastern Europe, which it says will hit British farmers.
