OVER 90% of fruit and vegetables sampled in the governments ongoing research into pesticide residue levels in food, contained no detectable residues.
But, within the 250 batches of fruit and vegetables tested, a small number of celery sticks contained higher residue levels than desirable, according to MAFF.
The government plans to advise celery growers of this, but Colin Berry, chairman of the Advisory Committee on Pesticides, reassured consumers that there was no health risk.
said: "Even if an individual consumed a portion of high residue celery, adverse health effects would be unlikely."
Commenting on the research findings, junior farm minister Jeff Rooker said that consumers could be reassured by the ACPs research and advice.
