Part-time farming is rung on ladder

PART-TIME farming as a way for young people to gain a foothold in agriculture is examined by The Scotsman today.

The article is based on experience of Keith Irving, who moved into agriculture part-time from a job in forestry.

Today, he has 64ha (160 acres) of ploughable land, supporting a 60-strong suckler beef herd.

Mr Irving is also chairman of the Scottish National Farmers Unions Argyll and Islands Regional Board.
