Pay for trials, GM firms told

SHADOW agriculture minister Tim Yeo has called on biotechnology companies to help pay towards the policing of trials of genetically modified crops.

Greater protection was needed for test sites, said Mr Yeo, who launched a new Tory farming policy document at the Royal Show on Tuesday (4 July).

He told The Times: “Chief constables should be able to ask these GM companies for a contribution to the extra policing costs.”

The pro-GM industry group SCIMAC told the paper that industry had “already taken appropriate precautionary activities to protect sites”.
