Peak District sees buyers in spending mood

HOLSTEIN breeders enjoyed a jaunt to the Peak District in Derbyshire last week where a great selection of cattle on offer at the dispersal of the Flower familys Winster herd put them in spending mood. There were 10 bids over 2000gns.

Although over 30 cattle were bound for Northern Ireland, mainland breeders were among the main contenders for the 310 head on offer.

World famous cow families inspired Brian and Leonora Whitfield to invest in several top priced lots buying for their Alderbarrow herd at Daventry. They gave 3600gns for Winster Storm Shower Red, an in-milk heifer by Glen Drummond Shower.

Her ET-sister realised 2000gns to J F Temple and Son, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk.

The 12-month-old Winster Freda Sweet, a 12-month-old daughter of Margene Blackstar Fred and bred from three generations of EX dams, sold at 3100gns to Peter Waring for his Winton herd at Beverley, Yorks. A full sister, two weeks younger, made 1700gns to local bidders T &#42 Flower and Sons.

Keith Gibbs, buying for Shropshire farmer Colin Cornes, had previously bought into the herd and this time gave 2500gns for a member of the Placida family. He also paid 2800gns for the 10,000kg Winster Skychief Placida 2nd, 3000gns for the milking heifer Winster Leader Placida and 1600gns for the nine-month-old heifer calf Winster Igale Placida 4th.

Progeny of the French import, the late Winster Granit (EX-93-2E), sold well reaching 2500gns for a freshly calved heifer by Ked Juror bought by Messrs Whitfield. Her maternal sister, Winster Milan Granit 7th, made 2200gns to T &#42 Flower and Sons.

In-calf heifers sold to 2500gns for Winster Mandel Roxie which is due in March to Formation. She joins Rob Kirks herd at Melton Mowbray.

The Haziliz family, which produced the bull Esquimau, proved its worth with some stylish heifers which sold to 2000gns for Winster Jolt Haziliz 3rd. This milking heifer is bred from five generations of EX stock and was bought by the Whitfields.

Averages: 139 cows and heifers £943; 60 served heifers £620; 60 maiden heifers £501 and five bulls £924. (Wright-Manley) &#42
