Production threat to British eggs

BRITISH eggs could disappear from supermarket shelves within 10 years because the countrys top 300 egg producers cannot afford to reform the welfare of their birds.

The cost of shifting from battery cages to a more humane production system is put at £550 million.

The National Farmers Union is calling on Nick Brown, the agriculture secretary, to find compensation for the big commercial producers.

British egg producers already lead the switch from battery cages, but fear the market will be swamped with cheap imports from the USA, Mexico and Brazil.
