Quality and prices up at Rouge sale

BUYERS responded to improving quality at last weeks Carlisle fixture for the Rouge de LOuest Sheep Society.

This was particularly so among ram lambs, which averaged £409, up £72 on the year.

South-west flocks are now among the best in the breed and it was a ram lamb from J &#42 Bowles and Partners Sidedowns flock that stood champion and made the days top price of 1500gns. By the good stock getter Broadwood Rock Solid, he went to J Samson, Lockerbie.

John Currie and Sons, Co Antrim offered Tullygarley Stirling, the champion ram lamb at this years Balmoral Show. He has a lean index of 148 and was snapped up at 1150gns by Frank Mattinson for his locally-based Troutbeck flock.

Mr Mattinson sold a smart lamb at 1100gns to Ayrshire based buyer D C Alexander.

Strong demand continued for south-west bred sheep with a 1000gns bid securing the 1994-bred French import Hunter – a class winner at the Royal Show for the last two years – from David Jane (Broadwood) and Bill Quick and Sons (Loosebeare). Buyer was J C Crust, Spilsby, Lincs.

Mr Jane stood reserve champion with a Hunter-sired shearling ram that made 1000gns to D G Davies, Brecon.
