Royal Show reflects diverse countryside

THE Royal Show, Europes premier farming event, is preparing to open its gates to the public today for the last time this millennium – with a different look.

More than 175,000 people are expected to visit the four-day show held at the National Agricultural Centre, Stoneleigh, Warwickshire.

The Show has undergone many changes this year to reflect the increasing rôle of industries other than agriculture to the rural economy.

As well as the traditional livestock competitions, machinery exhibits and trade stands, organisers have created a new Countryside Lifestyle area.

The lifestyle exhibit focuses on the aspirational aspects of rural living, including as country homes, gardens and outdoor pursuits.

“It offers the ideal chance to address the issues affecting those whi live and work in the countryside,” said Peter Stovold, the events director.

There is also more emphasis on Britains regional specialities following the success of the Cornwall exhibit at last years show.

The North Yorkshire section of the show this year will display the best of local business, tourism, food and farming within that county.

Last year almost 180,000 visitors attended the event, including some 17,500 overseas guests from 130 nations.
