RSPB launches Operation Lapwing
FIVE practical measures to boost the numbers of lapwings on British farms were announced by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds at the Royal Show.
In the 10 years up to 1998 lapwing numbers almost halved across England and Wales, it says. It hopes its Operation Lapwing will help to halt and reverse the decline of the species.
The new measures are a response to demands from farmers for simple practical advice, says chief executive, Graham Wynne. They explain how to protect habitats and safeguard nesting sites without having a big impact on farming operations.
Helping lapwings will have spin-off benefits for many other bird species, including linnet, yellow hammer, corn bunting and skylark, adds the RSPBs Darren Moorcroft. Details from the RSPB (01767-680551). *
