S American farmers tempted by cocaine
LATIN AMERICAN farmers are tempted by the rewards of growing coca, used for the production of cocaine, according to a special report in the Financial Times.
US drug enforcement officials have had some success in Bolivia in weaning the farmers off coca-growing by the use of compensation and loans to switch into alternatives like bananas, palm hearts, black pepper and pineapples.
The switch has not been without difficulties, however. The growing of such products as bananas and palm hearts has run into difficulties with disease.
