Seaweed aids Filipino poor

SEAWEED farming is supporting 180,000 poor people in the Philippines, reports the Financial Times.

Eucheam seaweed, of which the Philippines provides 70% of the worlds supply, is used as a source of carrageenan.

Carrageenan is used as a binder, stabiliser, and thickener in products such as ice cream, hamburgers and camera film.
