SNFU welcomes renewal of sheep
exports to France

THE re-start of sheep exports to France was “tremendously good news”, said National Farmers Union of Scotland hill farming convenor John Scott.

The French stopped buying British lamb in January after MAFF broadened its BSE controls to remove the spinal cord of sheep. This meant sheep carcasses had to be cut in half. French buyers prefer whole carcasses.

The French will now import whole sheep carcasses and remove the spinal cords themselves.

The start-up of exports follows the setting of the advance ewe premium at Ecu7.022 per ewe for heavy lamb producers and Ecu5.618 for light lamb producers.

The ewe premium in Less Favoured Areas has been set at Ecu5.977 per ewe for heavy lamb producers and Ecu5.379 per ewe for light.
