UNIFORM spray distribution is a good goal, but may not always be vital. Much depends on the biological activity of the product being applied, according to Swedish researcher Patrick Enfält.

Tests on 24 farm sprayers in Sweden showed a big variation in pesticide application. The dose ranged from 10-300% of the recommended rate under one old cone-nozzled sprayer operated at the wrong height, he notes.

In all instances poor application flattened the dose response curve. The more active the product, the less sensitive the system is to variations in application technique, he explains.
