Spy author battles with farmer

JOHN LE CARRÉ, the celebrated spy writer, is in dispute with his local planning committee over plans by a local farmer to build a farmhouse on the Cornish coast.

The author, who charted the deceptions of fictional British and Russian spy networks, is objecting to proposals by Jimmy Thomas.

Mr Thomas wants to build a 4000ft2 (367m2) “agricultural dwelling” close to Le Carrés own cliff-top home and holiday cottage at Tregiffian near St Buryan.

Le Carré, whose real name is David Cornwell, has in the past made some 18 successful planning applications.
