Stewardship agreements to continue

FARMERS who have agreements under the MAFFs Countryside Stewardship Scheme could continue to get money when the agreements come to an end in 2001.

Junior agriculture minister Elliot Morley said that when the first CSS agreements come to an end next year, they will be renewed where they continue to provide environmental value for money.

“Farmers hold the countryside in trust for the future, and Im delighted we are able to continue to assist farmers in this way,” said Mr Morley.

As the agreements come to an end, the Government will be looking at each case individually.

Mr Morley said those seeking to renew their agreements will not have to compete with new applicants for funding.

“Adequate money will be set aside for the continuation of existing agreements.”

Farmers will be informed of plans for renewal in spring 2000 and project officers will visit farms during October 2000-February 2001.

New agreements will be issued in April 2001, with accepted agreements coming into force on 1 October 2001.
