Survey finds 40% fat in burgers
BEEFBURGERS sold in leading supermarkets may contain up to 40% fat, according to a new report from a consumers watchdog.
The Food Commission, which tested 41 frozen beefburger varieties, also found that many were over-salted, filled with flavour enhancers and non-meat ingredients.
Leading supermarkets chains such as Tesco, Sainsburys and Iceland used meat that contained 40% fat, reports The Daily Telegraph.
The commission said slogans such as “includes 100% beef” were misleading as 40% of those tested were bulked up with ingredients such as soya, water and rice.
Food Commission co-director Sue Dibb called for better labelling including a clear statement of fat content.
