Suspicion greets new maize variety
By FWi staff
A VARIETY of maize which could prevent malnutrition is being treated with suspicion by promoters of development in the Third World, reports the Financial Times.
Quality Protein Maize, a non-GM variety packed with essential amino acids, on Thursday (07 Sep) won its developers the World Food Prize.
It is aimed at preventing malnutrition in children who die from being weaned early from their mothers milk and placed on gruel diets lacking sufficient protein.
But QPM is viewed with suspicion by groups and agencies which disprove of such top down techno-fixes.
Critics, such as ActionAid, say these seek a simplistic solution to complex problems into which education, cultural self-confidence and wealth factors must be factored.
