Tax ruling could save farmers thousands

By FWi staff

FARMERS and growers will save thousands of pounds following clarification of the tax rules for casual workers, says the NFU.

Misinterpretation by the tax office meant that many producers were applying normal PAYE tax rules instead of the daily harvest casual arrangement.

This was challenged by the NFU. The Inland Revenue have since confirmed the unions interpretation of the rules, saving farmers bills of up to 300,000.

Harvest casuals can work for any number of days. All employers have to do is keep a record of their names and addresses and gross pay.
