Texel champion attracts joint top bid of 2000gns

BIDDING twice reached 2000gns at the Texel Sheep Societys national show and sale at Malvern where ram lambs averaged £386 and shearling rams £430.

Auctioneer Clive Roads described the trade as "keen and continuous throughout the sale", which achieved a 77% clearance.

The supreme champion, selected by judge Tom Healy from Horsham, Sussex, was a shearling ram by Clun Baron from A E Williams and Son, Craven Arms. It made the joint top price to fellow Shropshire breeders G &#42 Moseley and Son.

Messrs Moseley were major buyers at the sale. They secured another shearling from the Clun flock at 1400gns plus 32 females.

A ram lamb from Keith Jamiesons Annan flock took the reserve ticket and made 2000gns to D G Richardss Ynysau flock in Carmarthenshire.

Other notable sales from this consignment included a North Quarter De Luxe son at 1900gns to E Jones and Daughters, Lampeter, Dyfed, a Muiresk Comrade son at 1100gns to the judge and a ram lamb by Annan Braveheart at 1000gns bought over the telephone by a Scottish bidder.

Best for the Millend flock of Herefordshire breeders R M and G L Watkins was a 1700gns call from W R Williams, Welshpool, for a ram lamb by Annan Double Value.

Shearling rams peaked at 1800gns for Rowden Diamond, a son of Baltier Winston that was a first prize winner at this years Royal Show for owner R C L Watts, Taunton. Buyer was R E Baseley, Carmarthen.

A shearling with a scheme index of 226 from Salisbury breeder T W Helyers Langford flock made 1600gns. This son of Tinwald-A-One joins D G Richards, Carmarthen.

A third prize-winning ewe from Bill Quick and Sons Loosebeare flock in Devon topped the females at 800gns to Charlie Boden, Cheshire followed by a 770gns call from J Beaumont, Thirsk, North Yorks for a shearling from Drayton Farm Partnerships Holtdown flock in Hants.

Averages: 145 ram lambs £386; 125 shearling rams £430; 145 shearling ewes £248 and nine ewe lambs £162. (McCartneys) &#42

Top notch… One of the rams from David Houghtons consignment to Lanarks recent sale, which topped at 22,000gns. This remains the top price for this seasons Texel ram sales.
